The Inaugural International Rubery Book Award

When I had my first daughter I was quite ill afterwards, and she sometimes had to spend some time in the nursery in the hospital. Once I went to get her and I wasn't wearing my glasses, and I was amazed that in a sea of babies I could myopically recognise my own one. I say this because a while ago on Facebook there was a photo of the judges discussing the books in the International Rubery Book Award, obviously at a final stage. And there, fuzzily, on the table, was the back cover of my book. I could recognise it anywhere.
It's the first year the Award has taken place, and it's specifically for novels that are either self published or come from small presses. Apart from a raffle prize in 1967 or something it's the first thing I've ever won. And it's pretty amazing.
I'd like to thank everyone who helped me, but especially Tony and Judith at Sarsen Press who made the book look so great. And everyone who helped along the way, the judges said my ear for dialect was 'faultless', so for that I want to say thank you to Gretta, Ryan, Sean and Adam/Ziggy. Because I listened to you, very carefully, and the woman at the checkout in Tesco in the Strand Road. And everyone else who helped.
And just today it's great.
